Week 3

Welcome to week 3! This week you will persuade others’ thoughts about solar power as well as find out just how powerful the sun really is.

Solar Power Persuasion

Activity

   One

You will work in pairs to write a letter to your (pretend) local member of parliament which outlines why the local community needs to use more solar power and less non-renewable sources of energy.

Step Two:

You should spend a short time planning with your partner what main points you are going to discuss in your letter before you start writing it.

You should use this persuasive letter exemplar to help you structure your letter.

Step Three

Once you have finished writing your letter, one person is to post it up on the class padlet under the heading ‘Week 3: Persuasive letter’. You should comment on one other post to suggest one other point another group could have added to their letter.

Solar Oven

Activity

   Two

You will build your own solar oven and watch how powerful the sun is as you will make and cook smores in it.

You will need:

  • ·Pizza box

  •  Plastic wrap

  • Black paper

  • Newspaper

  • Scissors

  • Tape

  • Glue

  • Aluminium foil

  • Wooden skewers

You will do:

1. Draw a square onto the top lid of the pizza box

2. Carefully cut 3 of the sides of the square to create a flap

3. Line the inside of the pizza box in black paper

4. Crumple up pieces of newspaper and place the pieces around the perimeter inside the pizza box to better insulate the oven. Be sure not to cover the centre of the box where the food will be places.

5. Lift up the flap that was cut into the pizza box and bend it back, so it is open. Cover the inside of the flap with aluminium foil, so the sun can reflect off the foil and into the pizza box.

6. Inside the flap, tape plastic wrap to cover the whole. This will allow sunlight to enter the oven.

7. carefully use a skewer to prop open the aluminium covered flap. It can be punctured through the flap and into the pizza box.

8. The pizza oven is now ready.

You will now use your solar oven to cook smores!

You will need:

  • Arnott’s ‘Marie’ biscuits

  • Block of dairy milk chocolate

  • Packet of marshmallows

You will do:

1. Place Arnott’s ‘Marie’ biscuits on the black paper inside the oven

2. Place enough chocolate onto the biscuit to cover it

3. Place a marshmallow on top of the chocolate

4. Place more chocolate on top of the marshmallow

5. ‘Cook’ in solar oven until the marshmallow and chocolate have melted

5. Eat and enjoy!

You will use your iPhone to film a time-lapse of your oven whilst it is ‘cooking’ your smores. Post your video on the class padlet under the heading ‘Week 3: solar oven time lapse’.

When you have completed the task for his week, send me an email to let me know and also let me know 1 interesting fact about solar energy.

Note: if you have not done so already, please check with your grown up to see whether the parcel with the week 4 learning activity materials have arrived at your house. Please email me ASAP if you have not got this.
